The quote is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln, but Jesus said it first, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to write a short story on the theme A House Divided.
Division is everywhere. In our country, in our homes, within ourselves.
You can apply this theme however you’d like. The “divided house” can be the beginning or the end of the story. Your story can be set in the past, present, or future, in a world very much like our own or totally different. Your “house” can be real, imaginary, or metaphorical.
We’re looking for well-developed stories with captivating characters, great dialog, and a solid plot. Draw us into a world we don’t want to leave, a story with a whole universe bleeding through the edges.
The winner of this month’s writing contest will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and be published to the School of Kingdom Writers website.
We are looking for previously unpublished narrative work. You can write fiction or non-fiction, but it should be structured as a story.
We’ll be looking at the quality of your story as whole. That includes your idea, your character and plot development, and your writing. You can approach the theme however you’d like, but we’d love to see some creativity.
Short Stories can be up to 5,000 words. Please send your work as a .doc or a .pdf attachment, in a standard font like 12pt Times New Roman.

How do I enter? Send your submission to contest@SOKW.org no later than 11:59pm ET on May 31, 2021. By sending your submission, you agree to the terms here.
Please include your contact information in your email. Please type your manuscript in a legible font (like arial, Times New Roman, etc.), and attach it as a .doc or .pdf. The maximum word count is 5,000 words.
Who can participate? Anyone. The contest is open to writers of all ages and experience levels. You may live anywhere in the world, but you must have a mailing address in the United States to receive physical prizes.
Do I keep the rights to my work? Yes! We will only publish the contest winner to our website. All others retain complete control and copyrights of their work. Before publishing the winner, we will ask for permission from the author.
Who will judge? The SOKW team will select a winner by June 15, 2021.
What do you win? The winner will receive bragging rights, recognition for their accomplishment, and a $100 Amazon gift card.
Runner-up will receive recognition and one item of their choice from the SOKW store. (Must reside in the United States)
When is the deadline? 11:59pm ET on May 31, 2021.
