As we prepare for full-time students to join us this fall, we are shifting our writing contests to a quarterly schedule. This quarter’s short story contest will be slightly shorter with a deadline of September 1, 2021. These contests are open to all English-speaking writers. There is no cost to enter.
Your challenge this quarter is to write a short story on the theme Breaking of Bread. You’re welcome to interpret this theme however you see fit—literally, metaphorically, or allegorically.
Bread is a metaphor that permeates the biblical narrative, and our very lives. From the manna in the desert to the five loaves and two fishes—there’s even bread in the book of Revelation. Jesus calls himself our bread, broken for us.
To “break bread” can mean to share a meal. In Biblical times, bread was harder than modern bread and needed to be literally broken, rather than torn.
Your story may be true or fictional. You may write in any genre or writing style you wish, but it should be a narrative (story). Set your story in the past, present, or future. There may literally be breaking of bread or you can riff with one of the many metaphorical concepts of bread.
The winner of this month’s writing contest will receive a $100 Amazon gift card and be published to the School of Kingdom Writers website.
We’ll be looking at the quality of your piece as whole.
Your short story may be up to 3,500 words. You have until September 1, 2021 to submit.
Give it a shot! You have nothing to lose.
